Clinical decision-making with virtual patients

LivingPatient is an educational simulation for working through a clinical case from beginning to end. History taking, physical examination, laboratory and radiology requests, and diagnostic and treatment decisions are addressed within the same case workflow.

Work through a case step by step

Follow information gathering, review of findings and decision-making within the same case. The screens below show different work areas in the application, each presenting information relevant to the next decision.

History taking: start with the conversation

Follow questions about the patient's presenting complaint and the corresponding responses. The history panel presents information gathered during the conversation within the same screen, distinguishing recorded findings from topics not yet covered.

Examination and investigations: review different sources of information

Explore case findings through the examination, laboratory and radiology work areas. Consider the information gathered during the conversation alongside other findings as you prepare for your next decision.

Diagnosis: review your decision at the end of the case

The differential diagnosis review displays the example case diagnosis alongside the learner's selected likely and alternative diagnoses. Links to relevant findings appear separately.

Treatment: explore the available options

The treatment interface presents the current catalogue, with search and filters for type and route. Review the catalogue information as you consider the options in the context of the case.

Revisit the decision path

Review the actions taken during the case and the transitions between them. Which information changed your approach? Which steps did you return to? Process analysis supports reflection on these questions.
